Brought us all together
This is the first Teen Titans book that I have ever really been excited about. I have read some of the past series before, but they never really hooked me in. But since the first teaser for this series was put out during the relaunch, I decided to give it a shot. Then I realized who was writing it.
After finding out the writer is Ben Percy, I’ve been chomping at the bit to read the series. He’s been doing a terrific job over on Green Arrow (which if you haven’t been reading, you definitely need to check it out. Especially if you’ve ever been a fan of that character).
Ben really steps it up a notch with this comic by creating a clear voice that is unique to each one of the characters. It’s this writing style teamed up with Jonboy Meyer’s art that really sets Teen Titans apart from the rest of the DC universe.
Speaking of, Jonboy Meyers has a very specific style when it comes to his artwork, which may not be for everyone, but works really well with Percy’s writing. Together they create a very sharp and stylistic book.
Other than a few issues of Spawn awhile back, I haven’t really seen too much of Meyer’s work before. But after this book, I’m definitely interested in seeing what else he can do on this title.
Now, as I said before, I’m not a huge Teen Titans buff. So I can’t really say if this story stays true to some of the past interpretations. What I can say though is that for the rest of the series, if they can keep up with what they’ve done for this rebirth issue, this will quickly become one of my favorite ongoing DC series.
This book is a real fun read and enjoyable as hell. Even if you aren’t necessarily a Teen Titans fan, I think you will really like Percy and Meyer’s interpretation of the characters. It’s very unique and cool.
