We all know people who go through life in a miserable fashion. They always have a bad attitude and rarely leave the realm of negative thought. This type of person is the eternal pessimist—constantly looking to play the victim or focus on the negative by thinking, “why me?”
One thing you’ll notice, these kinds of people rarely live successful lives. Sure, some might be financially successful; this all depends on the industry they enter. For instance, a mortician doesn’t necessarily have to be a positive person to perform their job well. They just have to show up and do the work.
But being financially successful isn’t the same as being successful in life. All you have to do is look at the self-destructive nature of many of the rich and famous for an example of this. And when it comes down to it, many rich or well-to-do folks fall victim to the “money equals happiness” way of thinking. This is a huge mistake.
Money doesn’t stave of negativity. It can help rid you of certain things that cause negative thinking: bills, debt, stress, lack of security. But it won’t make you happy. Of course, happiness has a multitude of factors itself. With one of the main one’s being about finding your purpose in life. Luckily, one of the other main causes of happiness is also something we can all attain.
That’s right, a positive attitude can make you live a more successful and happier life than someone of greater financial means. If you want to know what I mean, just take the simplicity of children for an example. Kids can have fun with a giant cardboard box and their imaginations. No expensive toys. No stress induced negative thinking because that box isn’t enough. They just enjoy the moment.
And that’s a huge factor in creating a positive mindset. You must learn to enjoy the moment. No more worrying about tomorrow, stressing over things you can’t control, or obsessing about how certain things could be better. Learn to appreciate what you already have. Then use that positive attitude to reach your goals for the future. And remember—because this needs repeated over and over and over again—enjoy the moment!
Starting your day with positive thinking is the best way to ensure productivity. Simply put, a negative attitude leads to negative results. If you wake up on the proverbial wrong side of the bed and carry that bad attitude throughout the day, it’s less likely you’ll get any meaningful work done. Let alone have any meaningful experiences. The negativity blinds you from it.
A negative attitude can also be contagious. Have you ever worked with someone who was constantly in a bad mood? After a while that bad mood starts spreading to others around them like a virus. And even if you try avoiding it, it’s likely your mood will eventually sink down to their toxic level. Avoid that person as much as you can. And for your own sake, make a vow to never become that person!
This isn’t to say you aren’t allowed to have a bad day; we all have those. But you don’t let that ruin your spirit. A bad day is just that: a day. It’s not a bad life. It’s not a bad forever. It’s just one day where things aren’t as good as you’d like them. But you know what, that’s a good thing.
If we had nothing but good days every day, we’d get bored. We’d stop appreciating our lives when things are going good because we wouldn’t know what it’s like when things are bad. The same goes for attitude. If you never have the experience of being in a rotten mood, you might not understand the power of being positive. You wouldn’t see the changes positive thinking makes in your life because you wouldn’t ever see how damaging negative thinking can be.
When it comes down to it, you can achieve a lot of great things in this world. But to achieve true happiness and meaning in life, you must have a positive attitude. Negative thinking will eat away at you like a cancer. It will age you mentally and physically. It will deteriorate your relationships, dreams, and career aspirations.
If you look at some of the most successful and well-balanced people, they usually have one thing in common: a positive attitude towards life. They attack each goal and life obstacle with optimism. If they fail at something, they just dust themselves off and get back to work. They don’t dwell on the negative. And neither should you! Remember, make the best of every situation. Life isn’t about becoming rich, it’s about experiences and making the most of the time you have in this world. Would you rather spend that little bit of time being miserable? Or would you rather have a good fucking time? The choice is yours.
