Hey there lovers of drunken fiction. It’s been awhile since we’ve updated you fine folks on what’s been going on with team DPW. But no worries, I’m here to fill you in!

The first thing you may have noticed is that the site no longer looks like something a 5th grader put together. Some months back I went ahead and did a complete overhaul of things. Gone are the days of having posts with no author names.

There are also no more ugly Twitter posts that would randomly occur even though social media shares were not activated. And hey, we went ahead and put together a new format as well. All things you probably haven’t noticed, but was a pain in the ass to work on regardless. Yay progress!

But you don’t care about that stuff. You just want content. And boy have we been working hard to give it to you. We currently use the following weekly format:

  • Monday: Articles on writing.
  • Tuesday: Life articles.
  • Wednesday: Comic book day! Usually one review and one comic book article.
  • Thursday: Poetry.
  • Friday: Flash fiction Friday. We also publish the work of featured writers on Fridays when we have the time.
  • Saturday: Serial Saturday. We publish an ongoing weekly or bi-weekly story.
  • Sunday: Classics. We publish classic short stories and poetry.

Now, isn’t that all exciting? Of course, we’d love to publish more work for you guys. Unfortunately, we do have real life to deal with. And since we are nonprofit, we aren’t able to pay the bills through our writing. Which, I may add, is a damn shame. Because I’d love to be able to pay the electric bill with a short story or the cable bill with a few reviews. Alas, the life of a writer is hardly glamorous.

We have been toying with the idea of bringing on board a few more writers. Or even doing some sort of open call to have more writers. I’ve worked with many sites in the past who had employed hundreds of writers at the same time. So I’m not adverse to working with other writers.

The problem comes with the time needed for editing. I currently edit each piece that we publish. And even if we only publish eight things a week, that’s still a big chunk of time editing and formatting everything. But we are up for solicitation from any writers who think they have what it takes to be a Drunken Pen Writer. And yes, we do take bribes in the form of booze.

Okay, enough with all that noise. Let’s talk about what we’ve been up to writing wise. Well, other than what I just mentioned above. For you folks who jumped on when we first started nearly a year ago, we were in the process of creating a short story collection.

We had planned on releasing that short story collection around Halloween. But we started getting press gigs and people sending us work and the women were just throwing themselves at us and Zac Efron kept calling and…. sorry, I’m getting off topic. We still want to release the short story collection, but we felt we needed to improve our writing skills more. Plus we’ve been extra busy taking trips, meeting creators, and doing press stuff.

Among other things.

It was the press events that was unexpected. We never planned on doing press gigs or covering various events when we started this site. But when opportunity comes a knockin’… Anyway, we’ve turned a lot of our short story ideas into pieces for the site. We’ve also been working towards entering various writing contest.

Yes, we have a writing site but are also entering writing contest. Why not just post the writing here and forgo the contests mumbo-jumbo? Simple. We want to win some shit. While we intend on publishing our own work in the future, we’re still writers. Which means we still want to see our names in other publications. And hopefully, we’ll see our names on the cover of some books that also have the name of one of the big five publishing houses on it.

Speaking of contest, we are also thinking about hosting one that has an actual cash prize! Again, we are a nonprofit organization. Which means we’d have to either come up with a submission fee or create a Patreon page. But we’ll see how things go first.

Our Halloween submission period will be opening up here soon. This year we’ll be doing a short story contest as well as a flash fiction contest. Hopefully we get some good submissions. Last year we just started up so our submissions were fairly sporadic. Regardless, we love reading some well crafted scary stories.

As evidence by our love for these nightmare creators.

Here are some more plans we’ve been sitting on. If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, (and why the hell wouldn’t you be?) you know we previously discussed starting a writing podcast. We were hoping to start it in the summer, but we decided we really want to do it the right way. No cheap equipment. No half-assed format.

We feel a podcast would be a great way to share our message and all the writing knowledge we’ve acquired over the last few years. And being DPW, there will be tons of raunchy lowbrow humor coupled with insightful and world-view altering discussion. Our plan is to save up to buy good equipment, setup a studio, and get to work the right way.

Little Orphan Annie ain’t got shit on the DPW Podcast.

Well, I think that’s all the news I have for you. And remember, if you would like to write for DPW, give us ideas, or just submit work, feel free to contact us anytime. We look forward to hearing from you. As always, keep on writing.
