American Jesus Book One: Chosen Review

From the writer of the Universal hit, Wanted, comes his next graphic novel on the way to becoming a feature film! American Jesus Volume 1: Chosen follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making?

Talk about having a religious experience!

This is the title that would eventually lead to the Millarworld universe of comics created by Mark Millar. In this story, a 12-year-old boy finds out he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. This happens after he survives a terrible accident without even so much as a scratch on him. As the story progresses, the boy, Jodie, discovers he has healing capabilities and other qualities shared with Jesus.

What I really like about the writing for this story is that it does a really good job of depicting what it would be like for someone that young to realize they were the second coming of Jesus Christ. All the other kids in this story are really well written, too; they seem like actual kids and act appropriate in terms of finding out one of their friends in the neighborhood suddenly got powers.

I’m personally not much of a religious man, nor do I look down upon those who are. My feelings, whatever helps you through the day as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, I say go for it. Millar does a really good job of walking the line of telling this cool story without bashing religion in the process—which I imagine would’ve been difficult with the way the plot goes.

I really enjoyed the art of Peter Gross in this series. Everything looks real enough, yet has a very stylized element to it. One of the best things when it comes to the art in this book is the way he portrays the kids. They actually look like kids! You find a lot of times with comic book artists, for whatever reason, they have a hard time drawing children. But Gross did an excellent job here.

The only downside for me is that this was supposed to be the first in a trilogy of books—with this one coming out almost a decade ago. Unfortunately, neither of the other two have come out since then. But there have been some rumblings that we might be getting to see the second volume here soon. Which would be pretty awesome considering the way this first one ended.

I’m giving American Jesus Book 1: The Chosen…
