“I saw Johnny last night, at the Christmas party. It was…weird. Good. But weird.”

Veronica smiled. Juicy. “Weird? What happened?”

“It was the first time we talked since his promotion. And we’d only chatted a handful of times since the breakup.”

“Well what did he say?”

“I just congratulated him, we hugged, said happy holidays. Nothing big.”

“So why was it good? Chances of getting back together?”

“Ugh, no, he’s our boss now. I don’t want to be ‘that girl’. I’m already unpopular. I don’t know, it just felt…almost like a sense of closure on the whole thing. Like we’re finally both moving past things.”

“Guess who got close to the boss at the Christmas party?”

Tony smiled. Veronica always had the best gossip, but this one seemed easy. “Let me guess…tall, red head, big swinging tits?”

“That’s the one.” She giggled devilishly. “She said they only hugged, but the way she was smiling when she told me, I’d be willing to bet they did more.”

“What, do you think they had sex?”

“Oh, I doubt it went that far, but I’m sure there were lips involved. Could you blame her? Johnny is a stud.”

“Naw, he’s not my type. I like my men to look a little worse than me. Not to mention he’s our new boss.”

“Well, her reputation around here can’t get much worse.”

“What are you so happy about?”

Jake tried to look innocent, but he knew he wasn’t doing well at hiding his excitement. Besides, he’d been working with Tony long enough now that the other guys could read him pretty well.

“Nothing…well, alright. I’ve got a date tonight.”

“Really? Do tell?”

“With Lucy.”

Tony sighed, doing well to keep the smile out of his eyes. “I wouldn’t get my hopes up about that one, Jake.”

“I asked her about Johnny, I know the two dated, but…she said she was over him now-”

“That’s not what I heard.”

Jake’s face flushed red. “What did you hear?”

“All I know is that someone saw Lucy and our new boss swapping spit at the Christmas party.”

“Are you serious?”

“Hey, you didn’t hear it from me.”

“Guess who got close to the boss at the Christmas party?”

“God, I can’t believe what an idiot I am!”

Grace watched him with sadness as Jake paced the floor in her office.

“Hey, come on, you aren’t an idiot. You’re brilliant!” She wanted to go on giving him compliments, but embarrassment quieted her.

“I thought she was different than all the stories, I thought she wasn’t like that…”

“Is this about Lucy?” Heat rose in Graces cheeks.

“Yes, but I…I shouldn’t go on. You know I’m not big on gossiping.”

“Jake, you’re upset. If you need to talk, I’m right here. I won’t tell anyone.”

He sat down in the black leather chair opposite of her and hung his head.

“We were supposed to go on a date tomorrow night,” he began.

Oh, you are an idiot! she wanted to yell, but didn’t.

“But now…today I heard…you know Johnny and her had a thing last year, right?”

“Yes, but I thought that was the past.”

“Well, apparently they couldn’t keep their hands off each other at the Christmas party.”

Grace’s hand shot to her mouth. “But he’s her boss now. Dating him before was bad, this…”

“Is wrong. But don’t tell anyone, please. I don’t want to get involved. I just want to forget the whole thing.”
