Howdy, y’all! This is your boy Big Skeeter and we’s gots sum fun fer you! Sorry, I’ve been reading a lot of hillbilly fiction lately. Speaking of (fiction, not hillbillies), I realized today, we haven’t held an open submission period in some time.

Since it’s officially spring (supposedly) I think it’s about time we open things up to you fine folks. So, starting now until June 1st, we are holding open submissions for short stories up to 5,000 words and flash fiction under 500 words. I’m also thinking of a few fun themes for this. Let me break it down in detail for you.

Submission Guidelines

Short Stories:

  • Can’t be any more than 5,000 words.
  • Swearing is okay.
  • No erotica or graphic sex scenes.
  • Gore is fine as long as it’s not too excessive.
  • We will only read one submission per author.

Flash Fiction:

  • Must be less than 500 words.
  • Swearing is okay.
  • No erotica or graphic sex scenes.
  • Gore is fine as long as it’s not too excessive.
  • We will only read one submission per author.

You must write about one of the following topics:

  1. Hillbillies: We’re thinking horror, but feel free to experiment. This topic isn’t only relegated to The Hills Have Eyes or Deliverance type hillbillies. You can take a John Steinbeck approach if you want and showcase hardworking country folk. Or you can write about hillbilly aliens from a backwoods planet out in the far reaches of the solar system. Again, have fun with it.
  2. Spring time: This is an open topic that deals with anything related to spring. No real restraints here.
  3. Magic: We haven’t dealt with too many stories about magic, so we figured it was about time. Again, no real restraints here, just make sure the story has some magic in it.

How To Submit

You can send your submissions to in the form of a word doc or pdf. Please put “Spring Open Call Submission” as the subject line. Also, send a brief synopsis of your story as well as a short author bio. We are only accepting one story or flash fiction piece per author. Anything more will be discarded without reading. We also do not accept previously published work (including work published on personal blogs).

If you have any questions about the topics, feel free to contact us and ask. This time around we aren’t going to be very strict with the topics and instead implore you to experiment and have fun. Depending on the volume of submissions, we are hoping to select and publish work weekly up to the deadline.

There are no prizes nor are you competing with other writers. We are simply looking for wild, interesting, and or weird prose to share with the world. If anything, think of this as a writing exercise that will be shared with an audience. Meaning, don’t take things too seriously. It’s all about having fun!

Submission checklist:

  • One never before published submission per person.
