For those who happened to be hiding under a rock this weekend, it was this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. What is now known as the biggest convention of the year. A lot of that has to due with the movies and television series adapted from the comics. But there are countless types of entertainment at this event. Whether you enjoy that kind of stuff or not, there’s no arguing that the event is an amazing spectacle to behold.
So I figured I’d take the time and go through some of the different bits of news to come out of this weekend. But first I must give you a bit of a disclaimer, I’m not going over all of the news. Because not only is that way too much stuff, but I also don’t really care about most of it. What I decided I would do it’s just go over some of the major things I saw that really set off my nerd alarm. Please forgive me if I didn’t cover something you may have thought I should. But you can always bring it up in the comment section below and we can talk about it. Now let’s get started.
Let’s start out with the return of the CW DC shows. First, we got to see the first little bit of the next season of The Flash and Green Arrow. With the Flash, we got to see Barry and the gang interacting with his daughter, who happens to be from the future—which isn’t even really that weird compared to the other stuff from the show. On Green Arrow we got to see what Oliver’s life is like now on the inside of jail. It seems pretty interesting. I just wonder how much of the season is going to be spent with Oliver inside a prison.
Keeping with the DC theme, we got to see the first trailer for DC’s new streaming network. The trailer for Titans was surprising. I wasn’t expecting such a dark take on it. But after watching it, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested. And anytime you can make Robin—who eventually turns into my favorite character Nightwing—look like a badass, I’m all for it.
Now onto what was probably the most anticipated TV related news: The Doctor Who trailer. Normally, Doctor Who news is a big deal every year leading to when the next series is about to start. But this year, with the news that the newest doctor is being played by a woman, people we’re dying to finally see some footage. You can’t call me a super Doctor Who fan, but I’m a pretty big fan of the series and can’t wait to see where this new season goes.
DC announced the newest batch of animated movies for next year. Among those, there was Superman that deals with the aftermath of his death—which they’re getting ready to reboot The Death of Superman movie they did over 10 years ago. There’s an original Wonder Woman story which is cool. But clearly the cream of the crop was the news that they’re adapting Batman Hush. Not only is it a modern classic Batman story that will work well in an animated movie, but if they go with the original Batman animated series for the voice cast, this could possibly be one of their best movies yet. I know for a fact Kevin Conroy has been dying to do this story for years. A few years back at Wizard World Cleveland I got to ask him what Batman story he would like to do as a movie of, and he answered with one word; Hush.
After waiting for what seemed like forever, we finally get to see the first Aquaman trailer. I’ve never been much of an Aquaman guy, but when done right, I have enjoyed comics featuring the character. And he was one of the few bright spots of the Justice League movie. I don’t know how much actual acting Jason Momoa has done for this movie—it kind of seems like he just plays himself—but you know it at least looks kind of entertaining.
Then we have the Shazam! trailer. This just looks like it’s going to be a whole bunch of fun—which is something we haven’t had yet in a DC movie. And Zachary Levi looks like the perfect casting choice in my opinion.
Let’s get into what is the biggest movie news, at least to me. The Dragon Ball Super: Broly trailer. Now this may not be up there as one of those big blockbuster movies, but this one probably has me the most excited. Not only are we getting Broly made into official Dragon Ball canon—at least for the anime—but it looks amazing, too! The animation is so top notch. I wish this movie ended up being like 3 hours long.
IDW announced they will be doing a new TMNT mini-series. Shredder in Hell is a five issue mini series written and drawn by Mateus Santolouco. I haven’t read anything that he has written before, but I know his art is beautiful to look at. Anybody who has been a fan of the series already knows that he’s probably done some of the best TMNT art there has ever been.
DC is putting out a new Shazam! series written by Geoff Johns. And if you have read his Justice League run, it appears he has a pretty good handle on the character. It’s no surprise that this is probably happening because of the movie coming out, but I’m okay with that as long as it’s good. It appears that 2019 is going to be the year of Shazam!
There had been some rumors that Grant Morrison was going to be working on the new Green Lantern book. It was officially announced that this is happening with artist Llam Sharp. It looks like it’s going to be a 12 issue series where Hal Jordan explores the Multiverse. I imagine this is going to be one crazy story that’s probably going to be best read while you’re on acid. It should be good, although definitely confusing. What really has me interested is I don’t think Morrison has really written this character much. He’s done GL a little bit during his Justice League run, but that’s when Kyle had the ring. I don’t know if he’s ever done anything with Hal before.
Well, that’s all I got for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. This stuff has gotten me pretty excited to see what’s coming out. And like I said before, if there’s something you think I should have covered, leave it in the comments and maybe we can get a good discussion going. I know there’s a lot I left out.
