Well, the weather has been beyond frigid with the polar vortex hitting much of the United States. One good thing to come from this is that we were able to catch up on some awesome reading, because we sure as hell weren’t going outside!

One such piece of great reading came in the form of a winter themed submission. This piece is a bit more unique in that it’s actually an excerpt from a novella called Speed Bump (which you can read for free HERE), by Canadian author, Barbara Avon.

Maybe it’s because she’s Canadian and has mastered winter, but Barbara has given us a very fitting piece for our open winter submission. Dealing with themes of self harm, mental health issues, and the need for others, this excerpt titled “Stacey” dives into what makes the holiday season and winter itself so tough on so many people.

We think you’ll really enjoy it. And don’t forget to watch the video at the end!

Cheers,
