True To Thyself

By Ashleigh Hatter

I can’t be me,
not when I’m you.
It’s impossible to be both and not know when I’m leaving one for the other.
Not possible…
Not possible to be both, cause
I can’t be me,
not when I’m you.

It seems so clear,
so non impactful,
a squirrel outside just sittin on your tree,
and then you see, you see me and you think, “Ain’t he
the one?” Ellipses follow and we know what you think.
Not educated.
Not indoctrinated.
Not religiously zealous, and ya
cast me off simply for the look I gave,
for the sleeves I’m wearing,
for the silver in my tongue.

And you tell me to be something more,
to stop knockin on doors, praying for orders, that I should aim higher, aim for
an office in a sweet sweet plaza,
with a window seat and a nice Bugatti,
with a secretary that lives to dote me,
for a check
fat O’s ready to serve me,
for

a family starving for attention when I be gone.

Kids to hate they daddy’s success,
and the most they hope for,
the most is the best,
is really just readin a damn book with they old man,
instead of gold and silver and iLife this and Google that.

Ha…

Seems I could earn the vaults of the most High
and still be a pauper,
without and losin sight
of all those blessings I have around me when I bein poor.

So please,
I know you mean well,
I know you want me to work my way outta this Hell,
and you wanna see me in a shiny new car and three story on the top of a hill
but lemme tell ya
spell it out for ya:

I can’t be me,
not when I’m you.
It’s impossible to be both and not know when I’m leaving one for the other.
Not possible…
Not possible to be both, cause
I can’t be me,
not when I’m you.
