I-70
By Ashleigh Hatter
There’s a lot of darkness
between you and I
you and me
you and who we meant in words for us to be
yeah, there’s a lot of darkness
between you and me, wide as
the whole state of Kansas
Some vows were made and
some things were said
for you and me
and you and I were bound until –
until our death –
yeah, some vows were made, infinite
as the whole state of Kansas
And I drove and I drove
in a motor made for less
for you and me.
Not that you’d know, when the
“check engine” was lit, freakin stupid
I spit, and I cursed such mindless crazy shit
at the thing keepin us so far apart,
wide as the whole state of Kansas
And when I got there and
knocked upon your door
rapped upon your door
called you to the door
who answered that lofty door
but a coked Roach and Minority Report;
told me to take a hike, e’en though I’m
knee high in snow,
so I turned Romeo to my Juliet
an’ your window was what I called upon
so tired, I was, after travelin
wide as the whole state of Kansas
but a day awoke,
and then parted the smoke,
and when we started to choke on the bills
an’ reality took swills of our dreams and our fortune and wills;
though
we always knew we could run,
op-posite the Sun
and find our way back
to the far side of Kansas
Back past the windmills of Kansas
Back past the grain hills of Kansas
Along the 70 in Kansas
Where dreams stagnate,
my Kansas
